Preparing youth to be work-ready and career oriented is an important aspect of the Workforce Investment Board's role. Emphasis is placed on eligible youth age 14 – 21. There are eligibility requirements that will be evaluated with individuals who may qualify for this federally funded program. If you have an interest in working with our youth counselors to improve your educational and employment opportunities; please contact the WIA youth program coordinator, Judy Needham, at 530-661-2642.

You can access information and services to assist with education, traning and employment through programs like:

Workforce Investment Act (WIA)
 
Income eligible youth, ages 14 - 21, may get assistance such as paid/unpaid work experience, paid internships, occupational skills training, leadership development, career counseling, college support, on-the-job training, vocational training, and job search assistance.

Other Programs & Services
 
CalLearn
 
Pregnant and parenting teens that are under age 19, recieve CalWORKs/TANF, live in the home with their child, are not in foster care, and do not have their high school diploma oir GED may be eligible for additional supportive services and incentives for returning to school.

Independent Living Program (ILP)
 
The independent living program is designed to assist foster and probation youth, age 16 to 21, in their preparation for a successful adulthood. The program trains youth in life skills and the necessary tools for emancipation. IPL is provided through Yolo County Dept. of Employment and Social Serivces.

Transitional Housing Program Plus (THP+)
 
Former foster and probation youth, ages 18 - 24, may be eligible to participate in this housing program which helps these young adults successfully transition to independent adulthood by providing 24 months of affordable housing, along with comprehensive supportive services.

As a comprehensive system, Youth Councils, created under the Workforce Investment Act, provide an excellent opportunity to examine the way young people make the transition to working adulthood and to provide the tools and guidance to facilitate that transition for all youth, whether in or out of school. Some of the tools are provided here that provide the focus for leadership in youth activities and for building a youth development system.
